James Akenhead wins Full Tilt Poker Million VIII - Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 09:24

James Akenhead has had a busy and successful year though he has been unable to earn a major title win this year until the recent Full Tilt Poker Million VIII. The final took place just a few days ago and Akenhead was able to come up with the win and earned the $500,000 first place prize.

Akenhead would face a tough final table with Juha Helppi, Luke Schwartz, Dag Martin Mikkelsen, Peter Vasilou, Taylor Caby and Craig Wakeham. Akenhead would soon find himself the short stack after losing a big pot to Schwartz but he would get back his chips when he went up against Schwartz again this time hitting a flush. Akenhead then gained a good lead and would make it to heads up play against Juha Helppi.

The heads up battle would be short lived thanks to high blinds and a pre-flop push by Helppi. Helppi held pocket sixes and was called by Akenhead who had pocket tens. The tens were a better pair and they gave Akenhead the title win, exactly what he had been working for all year.

Akenhead commented on his win stating: “It’s been such a great year and ever since I came second for a bracelet in such a brutal way I’ve just been striving to win a big tournament. I’ve made lots of final tables but not come first so to win such an event as big as Poker Million is just fantastic. I think I played really well tonight. I trusted my instincts and my reads and I didn’t make many mistakes throughout the whole tournament.”

2nd Place: Juha Helppi - $250,000
3rd Place: Dag Martin Mikkelsen - $200,000
4th Place: Luke “FullFlush” Schwartz - $150,000
5th Place: Craig Wakeham - $100,000
6th Place: Peter Vasiliou - $75,000
7th Place: Taylor “Green Plastic” Caby - $50,000
