This past April PokerStars held an Ante Up For Africa event during their European Poker Tour stop in Monte Carlo. The event was filmed and CBS began airing the coverage this past Saturday. The final day of filmed coverage will air on Saturday September 26th at 2pm EST. Fans can see their favorite PokerStars pros in action as well as celebrities as they took to the felt for this great cause.
The Monte Carlo charity tournament was similar to the World Series of Poker's Ante Up For Africa event as it had a $6,000 buy-in and celebrities from every category were on hand to participate. television, sports and music stars along with poker stars competed.
Team PokerStars members, Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Rousso and Joe Hachem competed as well as celebrities Nelly, Joel Madden, Jason Lewis, James Lee, Boris Becker and Christina Milian. It was former Team PokerStars Pro Isabelle Mercier who won the tournament after she defeated Teddy Sheringham, an English football legend, in heads up play.
Rousso commented on the event stating: "Each year at the World Series of Poker, I make a point to play in Ante Up For Africa. It’s amazing that PokerStars hosted the event in Monte Carlo to help a worthy cause and bring some fun to the table during one of their biggest events of the year."
The Ante Up For Africa charity was created by Don Cheadle, Annie Duke and Norman Epstein to help the Darfur region of Africa. All of the prize money from the Monte Carlo event was donated to help provide aid and assistance to the humanitarian efforts in Darfur. PokerStars released a summary recently with a statement that read: “More than 400,000 people have died and more than four million have lost their homes in Darfur since the conflict began. To date, Ante Up For Africa has raised close to $2 million for the cause.”
Ante Up For Africa events have become very popular and hopefully the tournaments will continue to be scheduled. This charity has the ability to raise a large amount of funds and really make a difference in the Darfur region.
