PokerStars EPT Vilamoura has ended and it was the first Portuguese tournament for PokerStars. The winner of the tournament just happened to be Portuguese. Antonio Matias from Setubal won the EPT Vilamoura taking home the top prize of €404,793.
Matias, age 54, will become the oldest EPT winner in the history of the tour, which is five years. He commented on his win stating: "I like to think of myself as a citizen of the world but it is very satisfying win an EPT in my home country. I just decided to play the way I play, and hope that luck didn't turn its back on me. When I got the chip lead yesterday the only thing I had on my mind was winning."
Matias was in the chip lead as final table play began and he gained a 7 to 1 chip lead by the time heads up play began. Matias would be the dominate player in heads up play and it would not take long before he would claim the win against Pierre Neuville in heads up play.
The tournament saw a total of 322 players competing in the €5,300 main event, 69 of which earned their seat online. The total prize pool up for grabs was €1,561,700. Over twenty Team PokerStars pros competed in the tournament. Those who cashed out were: Ruben Visser of Holland who finished in 13th and Jude Ainsworth who finished in fourteenth.
