The first ever PokerStar.net Ante Up for Africa Europe charity poker tournament has ended and players were able to raise more than €260,000 for citizens who are struggling in the war torn Darfur region of Africa. Out of the field of poker pros Isabelle Mercier was able to outlast the field and take the first place win.
The final table was full of PokerStar poker pros and a few celebrities. Dario Minieri, John Duthie, Patrick Chene, Sebastian Chabal, Luca Pagano, Tony G, Daniel Negreanu, Teddy Sheringham and Isabelle all sat at the final table with Negreanu holding a substantial chip lead over the other players.
Negreanu was up by more than one hundred thousand chips and looked to go very far but was eliminated in fifth place. Chabal, Duthie, Chene and Pagano would go out earlier in the competition and then Tony G would be next in fourth. Sheringham was able to knock out Minieri and that would leave Sheringham and Mercier to begin heads up play.
Sheringham held a three to one chip lead but Mercier would not let it stay that way. Mercier soon gained the chip lead back and eventually take the win. On the final hand, Mercier’s A-2 held up against Sheringham’s 10-4 giving her the win.
All players competing were glad to donate their time and money to the worthy cause. All players posted the €4,000 buy-in which created €160,000 in donations which PokerStars added another €100,000 to. Mercier commented to PokerStars after the win stating: “It was great fun to play, but overall I am very proud to have helped raise so much money.”
