After a torrential wait of 117 days, the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event Final Table - termed the November Nine - finally got underway Sunday. After playing into the wee hours of the morning, the final two were finally determined; Ivan Demidov and Peter Eastgate.
There are two things for certain as these two prepare to battle it out for the 2008 WSOP championship Monday. 1) The WSOP will see its first European Champion since Carlos Mortensen, and 2) PokerStars.net will bring home the title. Danish poker player Peter Eastgate and Ivan Demidov of Russia are both sponsored by the world's largest online poker room, PokerStar.net.
The momentum that carried the final nine into their respective positions 3 months ago simply could not be redeemed as each player struggled to regain their previous composure. Though much of the world expected Kelly Kim to exit early in 9th, it was actually Craig Marquis who took the honor.
Kim’s luck didn’t last long though, forced all-in by a Big Blind position on the very next hand. Kim earned the 8th place finish.
Eastgate began a path of destruction from here on out, first eliminating David "Chino" Rheem in 7th place, followed by Darus Suharto in 6th. Eastgate then ousted Scott Montgomery in 5th and Ylon Schwartz in 4th.
That left Peter Eastgate, Ivan Demidov and the favorite going into the final table, American Dennis Phillips, who started the day with a strong chip advantage. For Phillips, however, that exceptional lead was whisked away by Demidov only 18 hands into the final table of the WOSP Main event. Phillips held on for as long as he could, but again, it was Eastgate who sent Phillips packing in 3rd position.
Heads-up play comes down to Eastgate versus Demidov later today as the World Series of Poker Main Event prepares for its final evening of action. By this time tomorrow, we’ll be congratulating the 2008 WSOP Main Event Champion wearing the PokerStars.net logo
