Last Sunday's largest online poker tournaments followed the beaten path of status quo as overlays were the headline of the day. Even PokerStar.com, the world’s largest online poker room - incidentally the only one that does not experience regular overlays - saw its participation numbers in the Sunday Million drop low enough to result in a minimal overlay.
A field of 7,415 turned out for the online poker room’s largest weekly event, each posting the $200 buy-in that covered all but $17k of the purse. Granted, $17,000 is not a minimal sum of cash, but compared to the $1.5 million guaranteed to be up for grabs, not to mention the $111,225 profit PokerStars raked in from tournament fees alone, I don’t think the managers of Poker Stars.com were too terribly disappointed in the results.
Moving along to the real action of the day, this online poker tournament was all about deal making. Several attempts were made throughout the final four, and again during the final three, but it wasn’t until heads-up play that a suitable deal was struck.
"Darkillermax" came into the final table with a notable chip lead that still held up as he and “Salvo58” prepared to go one-on-one. The two solemnly agreed that “darkillermax” should come out of the evening with about $145k guaranteed. Near the same amount was guaranteed to “salvo58”, who would surely walk away with around $135k at least. The two would then finish the match to determine who deserved the remaining $30k.
When the dust settled, dark’s chip lead proved itself, having gone from excessive to all-inclusive as he finally collected every last chip on the table. After the previous deal-making, “darkillermax” would come out with a total 1st place prize of $174,656. “Salvo58” finished with an impressive $134,793 for 2nd place.
