| AP and UB Merge As CEREUS Network Launches - Monday, November 24, 2008 at 13:19

The CEREUS Network, a merged player base of Tokwiro Enterprises AbsolutePoker.com and UltimateBetPoker.com online poker room, has been scheduled to launch Tuesday, November 25th. First announced back in July, the long awaited merger - put off by an ongoing legal campaign between Tokwiro and former UltimateBet owner, Excapsa - will finally take place.
The announcement came in several forms, including an email from the Chipleader affiliate group on Monday, and a subsequent confirmation from UltimateBet.com sources. The combination of Absolute Poker and UltimateBet player bases will inevitably lead to exceedingly higher traffic rates, expanded promotions and, according to the email from Chipleader, a Bad Beat Jackpot that will "double in size".
The legal battle between Excapsa and Tokwiro came to a head recently, as stated in a press release from Tokwiro Enterprises on November 5th, declaring that Excapsa had been ordered to compensate Tokwiro $15 million. The company stated that it would use the funds to “refund players who were affected by the cheating scandal that Tokwiro inherited when it purchased the business from Excapsa.”
With that debacle settled, the merge of Absolute Poker and UltimateBet onto CEREUS was back on track. Information from UltimateBet regarding the new network states, “CEREUS is the result of more than 12 months innovation and development to deliver a secure, responsive, and flexible online poker gaming experience for the entire UB community.”
Members of Absolute Poker and UltimateBet.net will not be greatly affected by the merger, and are asked to simply log onto their respective poker rooms and play as usual. The only noticeable difference will be the higher rate of traffic and the promotional offerings expected to jump soon thereafter.
Each online poker room currently has its own ‘biggest weekly tournament'. At UltimateBet, this tournament occurs every Sunday with a guarantee of $200,000. Absolute Poker holds its largest event every Saturday, worth $150k guaranteed. Both of these tournaments are famous for overlays - meaning not enough players put up the buy-in to cover the guaranteed prize pool, resulting in the online poker room covering the overlay out of pocket. It will be interesting to see just how well the turnout for UltimateBet’s and Absolute Poker’s weekend tournaments increases when the CEREUS Network is in place.
