Annie Duke is one of the few well known women professional poker players, And she is pretty good looking, so she could really be a force to reckon with. With her beginners guide to texas holdem she explains everything in a simple manner that everyone should be able to understand. Its an hour long course on how to learn one of the best forms of poker out there, and be able to win at it. She goes over a lot of basic stuff that anyone who has been playing for a while might not find useful. If you are new to the game, or haven’t been playing for very long, I definitely recommend that you go over some of the important parts twice so the info sinks in if you don’t know it already.

She starts off explaining how cards are dealt out to each player, and also the rankings of each hand, which everyone NEEDS to know; you wouldn’t want to think your straight was good against a full house! She then explains how "kickers" work, and how important they are. Poker etiquette is pretty important so you don’t cause any confusion or problems during a game, she goes over a lot of the rules such as string betting, slowrolling, acting in turn, pot splashing, and how to fold properly.

She then goes into how the blinds work, and starts into how to actually play the game, she deals out a hand and goes over how all the betting happens, which I think is a little more confusing than actually playing and watching how it happens, she seems to really go into a lot of detail which can be more confusing than just getting to the point. She also switches between explaining limit and no limit hold’em at the same time while she is playing out the action on the hand, which I think she should explain just 1 type, especially for a beginner DVD.

A few other things she touches on are how side pots work, and also playing in position, and how you need to have real good hands out of position. Starting hand requirements are very important in holdem, and she briefly goes over what types of hands you want to play. She also goes over hand odds, which is very useful for finding out the likelihood of making draws, also she goes over pot odds which intertwines with your knowledge of hand odds to give you the best edge you can get in poker.

There’s a lot more information on this DVD that I haven’t mentioned. In the special features section, there’s a poker dictionary so that you can pick up on all the terms, and there’s also a little instructional video that explains how to go to a casino for the first time and sign up for a game and where to get your chips. I recommend this DVD for all new players, and even for players who have been playing for a while and might need a little refresher.
