I rate this one
the best of the Phil Hellmuth DVDs that are available. He is a well known player
with a well known history of winning (and whining), and thankfully he does not
teach the art of being a sore loser or throwing a tantrum when someone outdraws
you. This video shows off as much of his strategy as it can. A lot of Phil
Hellmuth's play comes from intuition and 'feelings' and that can not be taught.
What he does teach in this video are several key concepts used by many other pro
players and wannabe pro players around the world.
The classification of all players as one of 4 animal classes is a great tool.
Being able to quickly identify your opponents makes it easier to predict their
tendencies and anticipate their play. Many people have heard of these
categories, being the mouse, elephant, jackal, and lion. The mouse is the timid
player that only plays monsters, and only raises with the nuts. Watch out if the
mouse is in a hand. The elephant is an easy way to remember a calling station.
These are your best friends if you are playing correctly. The jackal is the
loose or crazy player, which can be a boon or a bane depending on the situation.
The lion is the player who makes all of the right decisions and should be the
way that we strive to play.
Some feel that this is more of a beginner's guide, and well, it is after all
explaining a system, so it starts out that way. At the beginning, it is very
basic and delivers a rather easily understandable way to play limit hold'em. He
explains that by playing ultra tight you are investing very little money into
most pots, leaving you more funds to raise and re-raise the big hands that you
do play. A lot of useful material is covered in the 70 minute video, but it is
by no means an advanced guide.
He explains the term ‘pot odds’ in a way that is easy to understand, yet not too
basic. The methods that Hellmuth uses to calculate pot odds are used in some
fashion by almost every pro on the circuit. He briefly touches upon position
and, in my opinion, if he went a little more in depth here, this probably would
be the must have guide for all players. As it stands this is a great video if
you are a beginner to intermediate level player.
