Poker Etiquette
Poker etiquette is often discussed amongst poker players, but if you're new to the game you're probably wondering what the term means. In life it's always important to be polite and show proper etiquette, however, it isn't always easy to remain calm. When you play poker you'll quickly realize that there are a lot of players out there with bad etiquette, but that doesn't mean that you have to stoop down to their level. I'm going to show you some situations below and how you should deal with them so that you don't become known as a player with bad poker etiquette.
The biggest rule that you need to remember is that you need to know when to talk and when not too. For instance, if you've folded your hand preflop and the flop would have given you the nuts, you can't say anything. Letting anyone in the hand know what cards you had while the hand is still being played is a big no-no. Since revealing your hand after the hand is over is counterproductive, you should just keep your hand to yourself the majority of the time.
While keeping quiet about your cards is the first step, you also need to ensure you don't talk to other players about a hand that's in progress. It's unfair to the players still in the hand if you're sitting there discussing the hand with another player that's either in the hand or also folded.
Whether you're winning or losing you need to be gracious. If you're winning some money and you start being rude or arrogant to other players they're going to do the same thing to you once you start losing. When you're losing money you can't start sulking at the table or else you're going to see the table turn on you quickly. If you know you're going to be tilted from a hand you should ask the dealer for a 30-60 minute dinner/lunch break.
At the poker table you're suppose to have fun, which means a lot of people will drink alcohol while playing. Drinking at the poker table is fine, but you also need to make sure that you don't overdo it. Drinking will not only impair your judgement, but you're also more likely to start getting loud and mouthy with the other players on the table.
Last, but not least, you should always be nice to the dealer when you're playing live poker. The dealers rarely change and you never know when you might get a decision in your favour because you're nice to the dealer. You should also always tip the dealer. In a $1/$2 game you should tip the dealer $1 unless of course there is no action preflop.
