Any serious poker player who is interested in improving his or her skills in this exciting and challenging game would be well advised to read the book “Super System: How I made over $1,000,000 playing poker” by Doyle Brunson. While there is currently a large selection of books and articles on poker, a tribute to the enormous popularity of the game, “Super System” is considered by many to be the Bible of poker and has been the book of choice for serious poker players for over 25 years. This is due, in no small part, to the legendary player who co-authored this excellent book.
Doyle Brunson has, for many years, been considered one of the finest poker players in the world. His achievements during more than fifty years in the game have been legendary. He holds ten World Series of Poker Bracelets, including 1976 Deuce to Seven Draw, 1977 Seven-Card Stud Split, 1978 Seven Card Stud, 1979 Mixed Doubles, 1991 No Limit Holdem, 1998 Seven Card Stud, 2003 H.O.R.S.E., and two champion event titles in 1976 and 1977. His winnings to date in national competitions exceed $4.3 million, and he has 11 First Place Finishes. He won the WPT Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles and took home over $1 million in prize money from this largest event in the history of the World Poker Tour. In 2004, Brunson was one of the first three inductees into the Poker Walk of Fame, with Gus Hansen and actor James Garner.
Born in 1933 in Longworth Texas, Brunson was a competitive athlete from an early age. As a college basketball player, he was considered a possible draft choice by the Lakers, but a serious knee injury abruptly ended his athletic career. Searching for an activity to channel his competitive nature, he took up poker. After graduation, he found that a 9 to 5 job was not as lucrative as playing poker, and started playing full time. Brunson was among the first “rounders”, playing underground cash games all over Texas. Brunson eventually found his way to Las Vegas, and has lived there ever since with his wife, Louise. He has authored two other books since “Super System”. His second book is “According to Doyle”, a collection of some of the columns that he wrote for the old Gambling Times Magazine, and “Super System 2” which he wrote with his son, Todd, also a professional player. Doyle Brunson has his own web site, called Doyle’s Room. He still plays in some of the largest cash games in the world with Chip Reese, Johnny Chan, and Phil Ivey.
