Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo Poker Rules

Seven card stud hi/lo is one of the few hi/lo poker games that has become popular in some of the big poker rooms. You won't be able to find many online tournaments for seven card stud hi/lo, but there are some lower limit cash games readily available in the bigger online poker rooms. If you know how to play seven card stud already you'll have a huge head start on everyone else since the rules are basically the same.

Gameplay

  • All players put an ante into the pot, which is a forced bet before the cards are even dealt. Dealer can then deal out two cards face down and one card face up to each player after the antes are already in the pot.

  • The player with the lowest face up card needs to put in a forced bet, which is either half the size of the small bet or the full size of the small bet. The betting moves clockwise around the table from here using limit betting rules.

  • When the betting is done the dealer can deal out one face up card to everyone still in the pot. Another round of betting happens at this stage in the hand using the small bet size. The dealer then deals out a face up card to each player and then the 1st round of betting using the big bet size takes place.

  • When the round of betting is done players receive their last face up card before another round of betting. The dealer deals out one final card face down and there is one last round of betting before you find out who wins the pot.

  • During the showdown players flip their hands over and make the best 5-card poker hand that they can and the worst 5-card poker hand that they can. You can use any of your 7 cards to make the hands and if you want you can use different cards in each hand. In seven card stud hi/lo the highest hand and lowest hand can win half of the pot. In order for a player to win half the pot with the low hand they need to have 5 cards that are 8 or lower without any pairs, so for example a qualifying hand would be A-2-4-5-7. If a player doesn't qualify for the low hand then the player with the highest hand wins the entire pot.

  • As you can see the rules of 7 card stud hi/lo are the exact same as 7 card stud other then the fact that the low hand can potentially win half of the pot. Seven card stud hi/lo is actually more popular then regular 7 card stud poker and it's easier to find games online for real money.
