Poker Tips

Poker is one of the few games that can take a lifetime to master, but if you're new to the game you should read over these poker tips that are sure to help you out. With so many different poker games and different styles of players it's very difficult to learn how to play against every type of opponent. Below are a handful of tips that you should implement into your game so that you can become the best player you possibly can.

  • When you start playing poker you should try out the different poker games so that you can find out which poker game you're best at. Some players are great Texas Holdem players, but on the other hand some players prefer playing Omaha and are much better Omaha players than Holdem players. You also need to play at the low stake tables or even micro limit tables when you start playing. It'll seem like you're not making much money on micro limit tables, but it's a lot better then losing your entire bankroll against the tougher competition on the higher limit tables.

  • Whether you're playing in a live poker game or an online poker game you need to always make sure that you follow the proper poker etiquette. Poker is about having fun and making money, but when you have a player on your table that's not displaying proper etiquette it can ruin the whole game. If you're playing live you should also watch how much you drink at the poker tables because nobody likes a drunk at the tables.

  • Although it's a lot more fun to play in a lot of pots, you should be folding the majority of your hands. It's ok to mix it up once in awhile with a marginal suited connector type of hand, but you shouldn't be playing a lot of flops. As you start learning the game more and the mathematics behind your decisions you can begin opening up your starting hand range, but at first you don't want to try outplaying your opponents because chances are they'll outplay you more often.

  • On the low limit tables you'll often see players calling down to the showdown to see what the other player has. If you think your opponent has you beat then there is no reason to call their bet no matter how small the bet is in relation to the size of the pot unless it's something like a $5 bet into a $100 pot. Most of the time when an opponent bets $45 into a $100 pot they want you to call the bet.

  • While bluffing is a huge part of poker you need to know when to bluff and when not to bluff. A lot of people tend to bluff way too much because they think they can push their opponent off of a hand. It only takes a couple bad bluffs to lose an entire buy-in so make sure you don't get to caught up in bluffing initially. Once you start becoming better you can try mixing it up more, but for now you should only try bluffing in tiny pots so you can gain confidence.
