The Asia Pacific Poker Tour is in Macau this week and the main event just started. Day 1A is now complete and 269 players ended up making it to the tables for the opening day of the main event. Day 1B isn't until tomorrow (Thursday), so if you're in Macau you still have a bit of time to register for the main event. The APPT expects there to be roughly 300 more players join on day 1B, which would mean over 500 players participated in the 2011 APPT Macau Main Event.
APPT Macau is always one of the best live poker tournaments in Asia and the prize pool is always big. Typically everyone can't stop talking about the event during this time, but this year things are slightly different. The big news at the APPT Macau event this week was that Phil Ivey showed up to Macau to play in the tournament. Rumours had been going around the poker world that Ivey was in Macau right now and once that got out rumours started swirling around stating that Ivey would be playing in the APPT Macau main event this week.
Phil Ivey hasn't been seen very much after Black Friday. He decided to boycott the World Series of Poker this year after Black Friday and he stood by his word in not playing in a single event. There hasn't been any indication as to what Ivey has been up to lately, but it's a great thing to see Ivey back on the felt and I'm glad he decided to choose Macau. Ivey hasn't played in a live poker tournament for over six months now, but he doesn't look like he's going to have much rust.
Ivey ended up making it to the 2nd day of the event with just over 50,000 in chips although at one point he did have nearly 100,000 in chips. Ivey was playing in a ton of pots on day 1A against his opponents, but it worked out for the most part until the end of the day, which is when he lost about half of his stack. Ivey will be back on Friday to play on day 2 with the rest of the remaining playing field, but he's got a lot of work to do if he wants to make a final table run in the event.
It should be very interesting to see what Phil Ivey ends up doing after Macau. I'm sure he's still upset about the Full Tilt situation, but it looks like he wants to get back into the poker spotlight. According to reporters at APPT Macau Ivey was left alone during the tournament and the other players on his table weren't keeping his occupied with questions about Full Tilt Poker. I'm sure some people have some questions for Ivey, but most of those people won't be in Macau. Make sure you follow the APPT Macau main event results to find out if Phil Ivey can win in Macau this week.
