Last week, the moderately popular online poker room Chan Poker closed its doors to the online poker world. The dream-child innovation of poker's legendary Johnny Chan - 10 time WSOP Bracelet winner and back-to-back WSOP Main Event winner (1987-88) - Chan Poker officially closed on August 21, 2008.
A quick visit to ChanPoker.com now offers only the official closure statement, which begins: "We are sad to inform you that Chan Poker will be ceasing operation effective this Thursday, August 21, 2008. Effective immediately we will no longer be accepting deposits. On August 21 our poker clients will be disabled."
Of course the largest concern would befall members of the online poker room who still hold a funded account with Chan Poker. The management of Chan Poker is reassuring all members with an outstanding balance that their funds are completely safe and secure, and will be honored promptly upon withdrawal request.
Chan Poker advised its account holders with the following message: “To facilitate timely withdrawals, limits for certain withdrawal methods have been increased. We will make every effort to accept withdrawal requests through our website for as long as necessary however we strongly advise submitting your request as soon as possible.”
Members can still log into their Chan Poker account to request the necessary withdrawals.
Chan Poker is trying to make the transition as easy as possible for its members. Once the final withdrawal request is made and processed, emptying the user’s account, Chan Poker will immediately close the account on the user’s behalf. No further action will be required from the account holder.
So the big question - Why? From all accounts ChanPoker seemed to be doing well for itself, it wasn't at the level of FullTilt.com or PokerStar.com, but it was doing far better than many of the small poker rooms still out there. Our guess is that Johnny Chan is looking to sign on with one of the other big rooms out there (the teams at FullTilt Poker.net and Poker Stars.net being the most likely destinations)and wouldn't be able to do that as a competitor. We'll see what happens in the next few weeks, I'm sure we'll understand more when Chan announces his next move.
