Foxwoods Trip Report

I apologize for the lack of updates, but there's a good reason!

To make a long story short, I got a puppy a few days ago, and it ended up being extremely sick. It was 24/7 puppy watch, and I ended up having to return it to the kennel so that they could treat him properly. It would have cost me thousands upon thousands of dollars to treat the dog, and after having it for two days, I wasn't ready to invest 5 grand into a dog, no matter how cute it was - especially if the kennel would do it for nothing.

Anyway, the trip report.

I got the night off and headed down to Foxwoods for some live action poker. I bought in to an $80 SNG and busted out quickly, but I got all of the "action junkie seth" out of me before I headed into the cash games, which definitely helped me out.

There were no real hands to speak of in the $80 SNG. I made some good folds, played a good game, but ended up having to push or fold and got caught on a steal from the cutoff. So that was it. The real story was at 2/5NL.

I sat down and bought in for the max - $500. The very first hand I was dealt were two black queens in the big blind. Action was raised to $20 from middle position, and the button popped it up to $60. I puked, thought about it, puked again, and decided to flat call from the blind, knowing that if I hit the flop, I'd stack somebody. The original bettor moved all-in without hesitation for $600, the button called $300, and I folded instantly. The original bettor showed two red queens, while the caller showed two black kings. Good fold, I suppose. I was basically drawing completely dead.

The next few hands, I called $20 and $30 raises with suited connectors and suited gappers hoping to hit a big flop, but came up empty each time. Before I knew it, I was down to $300 in chips. I decided to pull out a move that made me a bunch of money in London - the old donk bluff.

From UTG, I called with 54 offsuit, hoping somebody would raise. Sure enough, a middle position player made it $25 to go, and the big blind raised to $75. I called without hesitation, planning to push anything on the flop. The original bettor folded, and I, having position on the big blind, left him guessing the strength of my hand.

The flop was monstrous, A Q T. He checked, and I pushed immediately. He thought for a full minute and folded KK faceup, certain that I got a piece of the flop. I showed the 54 offsuit to the entire table, and everybody oo'd and ah'd. Two players shook their heads, one person told me I'd be broke in ten minutes.

I raked in the pot, and twenty minutes later found KK in the big blind. An UTG raiser made it $25 to go, the small blind called - the same guy I bluffed with 54o - and I made it $75 even to play. Both players called.

The flop was J 9 6 rainbow. The small blind checked, and I pushed. The UTG player folded, and the SB called instantly with AJ and didn't improve. He told me he put me on AK.

Score one for the good guys! I was sitting on a stack of $600. Exactly two hands later, I found KK on the button. An MP player raised to $30 even, I re-raised to $90, he re-raised to $200, and I put him all-in for his last $200.

"Do you have aces?" I asked.

"No, don't tell me you have kings again..."

He turned over QQ, failed to suckout, and there I was on a stack of slightly more than $1000.

I played a few more hands, then got up and got myself some steak, bought my girlfriend an emerald necklace, and headed home for some shuteye. Here I am now. It's late, I'm exhausted, and I'm going to sleep. Happy holiday weekend!

No Poker

I haven't played much poker in the past few days.... in fact, I haven't played any at all. I've been so busy at work, and I've been enjoying any relaxation time on the beach, or at the driving range. I finished three different books this week, which was nice. I've gotta head back to B&N to pick up some more new paperbacks for those beach days.

So what does the week hold? I got a haircut today, woohoo. Also, on Thursday I found out I was accepted to St. John's Law School outside of NYC, so that was good news. Much better school than NY Law, so I was pretty excited about that. What else... tomorrow I'm playing in a big softball tournament, and my girlfriend, friend and I are heading down tonight to get dinner, drink, and stay the night before meeting up with everybody else.

Next Monday I get my puppy! We got a tiny little Shih Tzu and named it Cooper, and the little furball arrives Monday night. We're so excited about the little guy. I love little dogs, especially ones that don't bark that much. Big dogs... not so much. They jump on you and lick you with their big tongues... it's like getting a saliva shower. Ew!

Other than that, not much else has been going on lately. My sunburn is itching out of control and I can barely sit in one place for more than 3 seconds. So that ends my post.

Can't Lose

I'm now sufficiently bankrolled for the $55s. This quest might take shorter than expected, as my bankroll has peaked at $1650 right now. I won a few $33s, some $22s, and after spending $109 on an entry to the UB 8pm 20k and donking off my chips, I'm sitting at the $1650.

It was really standard poker. Nothing fancy. And I'm in the money. Glad I didn't go to work today :)

continuing

Something I'm accustomed to doing is taking a profit I make at the tables and taking a shot at the higher limits in order to grow my bankroll. What I did tonight was win two $20 sngs on Ultimatebet, and I took $200 to a 2/4 NL table. I turned that $200 into close to $800 with the help of this glorious hand.

I love suited connectors and suited gappers. They're my money making cards in NL. I prefer post flop play as opposed to preflop play, since I can better assess what kind of risks I'm taking. With 9c10c, I'm happy to see a flop, and I flop a double gutshot with a flush draw. Since action was limped around, I'm not putting anybody on any serious hands, and I really don't have a read on anyone.

I get check-raised. In some cases, I might push back, but he had a lot of money behind, and I was going to see the turn card. It bricked for me, but hit for him. He went ahead and bet out $80 into a pot that size, and left about $270 behind or so. Still plenty of money if I hit on the river. At this point, the club misses, and he had put me on a flush draw. Fortunately, it was a card that completed my straight.

He checked, hoping to get me to bluff at the large pot. So I pushed, and he called immediately, showing AJ. Hell yeah!

Sometimes it's good to be lucky. I'm halfway to the plasma TV with $1000+.

Quest for a Plasma TV

I've set the quest for a plasma TV. I'll be moving into a new apartment in Manhattan in mid August, and I want a flat screen to tie it together. I deposited $100, and I just passed the $700 mark this morning after flopping a straight against an overpair at 1/2NL.

$1500 more and I can get a sweet 50 inch plasma. That is all.

some poker

Last night I drove into NYC with my girlfriend for my best friend's 21st. We went to this place called Down the Hatch, had an open bar for a few hours, got ridiculously smashed, and then managed to pile into a towncar to take us to the Penthouse strip club off of 11th somewhere. I was blackout drunk, so I really have no idea how we got there. It was pretty fun.

Anyway, I've got to head to work at 3:45, but I managed to get a quick poker session in. I was feeling frisky, so I bought in super short to two 1/2NL games. Within 20 minutes, I had profited over $300, but I managed to give back $100 before calling it even and cashing out ahead. Here were two hands that vaulted me into the black.

I think I only called because it was sooted and I'm mega hungover. I was out of position, facing a pot sized raise preflop, and... well... it's K3. I'm not sure what I was thinking. I picked up a flush draw on the flop, and rather than just sit on it and try to draw, I raised the original bettor. To my dismay, the guy to my left called immediately, and I suspect the original bettor folded an overpair. I thought I had just ran into a set, and definitely needed the spade. Turns out, he was on nothing but a worse flush draw than me, and I raked a $250 pot with a pair of 3s.

Here's another hand, this one I actually played well.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?369625

The hand before this, I had showed the guy a flopped straight flush. He had top 2, and lost a little bit of money on that last one. He open raised, and given the range I had seen him play, I was probably ahead. I re-raised to $26 preflop, and he called instantly. I had no idea what he had.

When the ace flopped, I figured I was golden. Except, I wanted him to put me on a hand like KK or QQ, so I just checked, giving up a free card. The turn was a J, and I hated it, but I went ahead and bet the pot. He called quickly, leaving $9 behind, so he was all in on the river no matter what. I just went ahead and bet out the river, figuring I was beat, but he'd be pushing it no matter what. So, he called... exposing A9.

Well, that was nice! The check on the flop probably got me that action, so that was cool. Anyway, shower time. Peace out.

A Rebirth

Since moving in with my girlfriend, I struck a deal with her. Earlier this year, my poker playing had spun way out of control. Although I had made a good amount of money in London, I was playing outside of the limits I was bankrolled for. To make a long story short, I ended up going broke not once, but twice. It was a learning experience, and I'm glad it could happen when I was young... without a family to support.

My family and main squeeze were concerned about my playing, but I managed to fight through it, take a nice long hiatus, save some money, and keep busy with schoolwork and real work. Now school work is done, and I work long hours at my job. I've also got WorldPokerRules to keep me company, but what to do in the downtime?

I wanted to play poker again recreationally. So I said, "Honey, I'm going to throw in $100, and if I lose it, I won't play poker online ever again." She agreed.

We had just come home from work, and we caught ourselves with quite a bit of downtime. I threw in that $100, quickly won two $5 sngs, and took my winnings to a .5/1NL table. Only the winnings. Ten minutes later, I was ahead $250 of my original deposit, bringing my whopping bankroll to $350. Here goes nothin'.
