The Deck of Cards

The deck of cards has a long history that dates all the way back to Ancient India, which is where most historians believe cards were first invented. There isn't much evidence showing this however, which is why many people are unsure. Playing cards have been found in China that date back to the Ancient Chinese era although the cards were a lot different then what we play poker with today. The cards used in Ancient China had four suits and the cards 1 through 9, but there were no face cards or aces at this time.

Playing cards didn't start moving throughout the rest of the world until around the 1300's. Playing cards can be dated back to the 1300's – 1500's in many countries throughout Europe including England and Germany. Throughout the next few centuries playing cards went through a massive change and many new designs were developed around the world. The modern deck of cards that we're all used to playing with dates back to the end of the 14th century in France.

During the end of the 14th century in France the deck of cards started adopting the four suits that we play with today, which include hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades. The deck of cards wasn't exactly the same as we play with today though, as they still used different cards in the deck that we no longer use. Nowadays the modern deck of cards has 52 cards although you'll often have 54 cards in the deck due to two jokers being added into most packs of playing cards since they're needed in some card games.

The cards used in a deck of cards today differ a lot from back in history. A modern deck of cards includes the numbers 2 through 10, jacks, queens, kings and aces. The aces are considered to be the high card typically although in some card games the ace can be used as a low card as well. A long time ago the king use to be the highest card in the deck and the ace was the lowest, but that was changed and the ace became the highest card in the deck.

There is four of every card in the deck with each card being a different suit. For instance, there are four aces in a deck of cards with one ace of spades, one ace of hearts, one ace of diamonds and one ace of clubs. Not to many people worry about this history of the deck of cards, but it's quite interesting to see how people in history used cards to gamble.
